Chapter Ten

“What about this clip?”

Patrick looked over Elaine’s shoulder at the computer screen where she reviewed the footage for the montage episode—the last episode before the final voting-off ceremony.

Touching her shoulder as he leaned closer, he breathed in her fresh, clean scent. He couldn’t bring himself to take advantage of the obvious feelings she had for him. But at the same time, he couldn’t help himself from touching her.

Something bad had happened in her past, and he wasn’t qualified to deal with it. However, unqualified and not wanting her were two separate things. He wasn’t in the habit of trusting with his heart, and he suspected, given a few of the hints she’d dropped, Elaine couldn’t trust with her body. It didn’t leave them a lot of middle ground. Helping her sort out her issues was more responsibility than should be entrusted to him. He refused to be the one to mess her up further. And he knew himself.

“Patrick?”

“What? Oh, sorry.” He tried to focus on the screen and not on how soft the skin of her neck looked or how sweet it would taste if he dropped his head and put his mouth on it. Jeez, he was a goner. Focusing on what he was supposed to be doing for a moment, he looked at the screen. “Wait a minute. That’s a scene with Jay.” He watched as his brother kissed Sophie on the beach.

The audio needed cleaned up a bit because the rush of the surf muffled some of their words, but they had a guy at the studio who was great with that sort of thing. “You know if you use that, David won’t stand a chance,” Patrick said.

“Yeah, I’m aware of that.”

“Jay’s already begged me twice to make sure that David looks really good in this episode. He doesn’t want to marry her.”

Elaine raised an eyebrow. “I want you to see something.” She cued several clips and started them playing.

“These are from the hidden cameras in the dining room?”

“Yup. Looks like they’ve had breakfast together nearly every morning.”

The expression on his brother’s face as Sophie giggled was incredible. “He loves her,” he said after a moment.

“I think you’re right.”

“You don’t get it. That’s huge. I never thought he’d fall for anyone again. His ex-wife did a real number on him.” Suddenly, Patrick saw his role as Jay’s savior from a completely different point of view. His job wasn’t to save his brother from having to marry Sophie. Patrick needed to save Jay from himself, whereby he would marry her.

His brother was an honorable enough man that he’d marry her because he signed the agreement. He wouldn’t be happy, but he’d do it.

“Is this fair to David?” Patrick asked as Elaine pulled another clip from breakfast into the mix.

She rolled her eyes. “This is reality TV. There’s nothing fair about it.” When Patrick tried to break in, she kept talking. “Is it fair to David to let him marry Sophie when clearly she has stronger feelings for Jay? Or fair to Sophie, for that matter?”

“Good point.
